How to Compost
“Our world, like a charnel-house, is strewn with the detritus of dead epochs.”
-Le Corbusier, Towards a New Architecture
Composting is actually pretty easy. Everything on Earth is decomposing at different rates towards entropy. But organic waste is dense in nutrients and landfills are about ⅕ organic waste. Those landfills pump methane into our atmosphere causing global warming. And all it takes to curb that is to simply separate your kitchen scraps from other trash. Farmers on YouTube legit call compost gold because of how nutrient dense and nitrogen rich it is. Food is a resource weather you can eat it or not. All you really need to start composting are three things.
1) organic waste. (dead stuff)
2) a compost bin; I got this trash bin with a lid from home depot for around $10
3) Somewhere to put your waste to rot; you can get a fancy compost tumbler but a hole and a pitchfork work just as good.
Now, there is some ratios that you need to pay attention as to not end up with rotting detritus in your backyard. The general rule of thumb is 1 part nitrogen (stuff like fruits, plant trimmings,& hair) to 2 parts carbon (stuff like paper, fall leaves, & woodchips)ᵗᵃᵇˡᵉ. That's it! Just water & mix it about every other week and BAM, you've got soil! The whole process will take a few months to complete and I do recommend a trash bin with a lid because it can get a bit stanky before you add carbon. There are some things you wanna avoid tossing in there like meat, dairy products, or carnivorous animal droppings but just about everything else is fair game. And if you're not too sure; googling takes seconds to do. If done right the pile shouldn't be overwhelmingly smelly and should be hot and humid. Thanks for reading n stay saucy.
